Since the beginning of time, people have had a knack for collecting various things; from classic art to old records, there is something for everyone. Some of the most sought-after and valuable collectibles contain faces from the most famed athletes of all time, including Topps® Major League Baseball cards which continue to be a massive staple in the United States. For over 70 years, fans around the country have searched for these cards to add to their ever-growing collections, thrilled when they collect a rare card found in mint condition. And now with the Digital Age in full swing, it is time for a huge announcement… WAX has partnered with Topps to bring Topps MLB Series 1 Baseball cards to the blockchain as NFTs!
A legendary history
Major League Baseball cards originated quite some time ago in the 1860s. As the years progressed, it certainly did not take long for the idea to gain traction. Fast forward to 1952 when Topps monopolized the market. With their first 7 series, baseball cards exploded in popularity. People from all over searched for their favorite cards and began forming their collections. Now, in this day and age, fans continue to crave the excitement of possessing one of these rarities. Specifically, for those who are familiar, the Mickey Mantle card recently sold for a record-breaking $5.2 million.
Finding some of these collectibles may sound easy, however, finding one in mint condition proves to be a bit more challenging. Traditionally, MLB cards are graded on a scale of 1 to 10 — with 1 being poor quality and 10 being mint condition. The higher the grade, the more the card is worth. Now imagine owning one of these rare cards and not having to worry about age, wear, tear, and damage. This is where WAX steps in to save the day. “We’re excited to be working with a venerable heritage brand like Topps to tokenize MLB trading cards for the modern collector,” said William Quigley, co-founder of WAX. “The WAX Blockchain is the safest and most intuitive platform for Topps’ largest NFT release yet.”
The WAX Blockchain offers consumers a way to own a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that will never depreciate in value due to physical limitations. With these digital collectibles being 100% verified as authentic, unchangeable, and safely stored on IPFS, know that your items will hold value for the years to come. This is where it gets fun: on April 20, Topps MLB cards will be released on the WAX Blockchain.
What can fans collect?
In celebration of Topps 70 year anniversary of creating MLB cards, the first Topps MLB collection on WAX will boast an astonishing assortment of various major league athletes sporting their team gear. Explore the nostalgic classics in a new and exciting way in the form of digital collectibles, known as NFTs. There are a total of 1,986 different cards that can be found in 1 of 10 dazzling rarities.
“For more than 70 years, the partnership between Major League Baseball and Topps has delighted collectors, celebrated legendary players and honored America’s pastime,” said Tobin Lent, VP & General Manager of Digital at The Topps Company. “Whether our fans have been collecting for decades or just now diving in, debuting our MLB collectible series as NFTs marks a historic moment in the evolution of collecting. We’re excited to bring our years of digital innovations to 2021 Topps Series 1 and provide another avenue for fans to collect with better security and transparent pricing.”
Previously on WAX, certain collections have sold out in as little as 35 seconds, and high demand is anticipated for the Topps MLB Series 1 collection. On April 20, 2021, packs will be available for purchase on the WAX platform at 1 pm EST. You can learn more about the release here.
There are 2 pack sizes:
- Standard 6 cards for $5 with 50,000 available
- Premium 45 cards for $100 with 24,090 available
When opening a pack, you have a chance at receiving 1 of 10 exciting rarities on each card, including but not limited to:
- Super rare
As an added feature, all Topps MLB cards are pre-minted in the packs. This benefit allows collectors to have a chance at receiving lower mints, regardless of when the packs are opened. Open your packs at your pace; either immediately or one year from now, the odds of receiving a lower mint never diminishes. This also increases the value of unopened packs over time due to the possibility of them containing one of these lower mints. Even 10 years from now, unopened packs will continue to hold their value — and then some!
Collectors can “Burn” or trade in 5 select base cards during a 5-week long event for a chance to receive exclusive Topps® 1952 cards of their favorite modern players! Keep a lookout on social and in the LIVE marketplace for more details!
You can easily trade any unopened packs or individual cards to anyone with a WAX wallet, sell them on the secondary NFT market, trade them or simply show them off on social media to all of your friends.
Various past NFTs have resold for above $70,000 with the use of WAX-powered marketplaces and dApps. Following many other successful releases, the Topps MLB Series 1 collection is expected to hit a home run.
Collecting MLB trading cards is a long-standing tradition in this country. Continue the legacy and grow your digital collection with WAX and show your items off to the world!
